Though Ng came from a well-to-do family of over-achievers, she and her family faced quite a few instances of racism. She relates accounts of how her father was driving and little girls threw pebbles at him. She has also been asked all kinds of ridiculous questions about China, in spite of the fact that her family is from Hong Kong. Though she has never faced outright and violent racism, she simultaneously found it humorous and sad when a fan asked her how she researched racism during the period of the novel.
